What Does Snow College Offer in Nursing?

Snow offers its own LPN program and the course prerequisites that are required for other nursing programs. Let’s face it, nursing is one of the more complex majors to talk about because there are many different pathways that you can  follow. Our handout called "Nursing Pathways & Options" can help you make sense of which path best fits your situation.

What Classes Should I Take at Snow?

Before you can get admitted into a nursing program, you need to take certain courses (called "prerequisites"). The common nursing prerequisites include   nutrition, psychology, human anatomy and physiology, microbiology and more. Be sure to check the websites for the specific nursing programs you are considering, so that you know their exact admissions requirements.

Most students who major in nursing at Snow plan to complete an Associate of Science (AS) or an Associate of Arts (AA) degree. If that’s what you plan, you will take 31 credits of General Education courses in addition to prenursing courses.

A few students come to Snow to take only the prerequisites for admission into a nursing program. Those students do not complete all of their General Education requirements nor an AA/AS degree. Frankly, we seldom recommend this option because it is extremely difficult to maintain good grades while you are only   taking nursing prerequisites. In addition, completing the AA/AS now makes it   easier to move into an RN program later.

How Hard Is It?

Nursing is a tough major. Many nursing prerequisites require threetofive hours of homework per day. When you develop your class schedule, try to balance your classes so that you are not overwhelmed and can maintain the high grades required for this major. (Admission is competitive!)

What Other Courses Would be Helpful?

We’ve been told that the best nurses have a genuine concern for people and a caring nature. Any classes that involve you in service or that strengthen your "people skills" would be useful. Good classes include: Civic Engagement and Service Learning (GNST 1100), Interpersonal Communication (COMM 2110), and Family Relations (HFST 2400). Nurses also interact with a wide variety of people and cultures. Courses that would help you include: Intercultural         Communication (COMM 2150),  International Partners (TSFL 1050),

People and Places of the World (GEOG 1300), and any foreign language.
