THE BASICS
Major prerequisites
Most majors require specific classes the first two years.  When students are planning schedules they should plan for these prerequisite classes.  A list of these classes for many majors is available at http://www.snow.edu/~advise/majorguides.html
Students should contact faculty in their departments and advisers at the university to which they plan to transfer.
BUT I’M UNDECIDED!
First of all, don’t worry, you are in the majority.
Take “GE” classes that interest you most.
Try enrolling in Real World classes.
Careers classes: Biology, Medical, Agriculture.
Career Decisions class GNST 1500
Career research
Talk to faculty and staff about careers.
I think I can graduate early!
Coming to Snow College and finishing in one year can be a great idea.  Having an Associates Degree can really give you an advantage when transferring to the “big schools”.  If you’re getting close to 30 credits, call us.  We should talk!

FREE ADVICE
After advising thousands of students, the staff in the Academic Advisement Office have come up with what we call “Free Advice”. Free Advice tips can help you get started on a successful college experience.  Part of college life is learning to inform yourself.  This idea stretches not only to class work, but to majors, prerequisites, and graduation.  So enjoy some freebies on us.
Free Advice TIP # 1
FORGET YOUR PREVIOUS GPA
It really won’t matter now that you are a college student.  You get a fresh slate, and what you do with this new start totally depends on you.
Free Advice TIP # 2
Have all official transcripts to Snow College as soon as possible.  We need this so you don’t take the same class twice.
AP credit
Concurrent enrollment
Advisors need all of the above information to help you organize the best schedule.  Snow accepts this credit only if we have your official transcripts.
Free Advice TIP # 3
ACCEPT REALITY
Classes meet at 7:30 am (yes, morning)
Classes meet until 9:30 pm
Classes meet on Friday
We are sorry but some classes are already full.
There are no easy classes.
Yes, it’s hard-it’s college!
Free Advice TIP # 4
SNOW COLLEGE IS EASY TO GET ADMITTED INTO, BUT NOT “EASY”
Because Snow College is an open enrollment institution it is easy to get into.  However, the easy part stops on the first day of class.  You will have daily homework, daily reading, and the work doesn’t stop.
FIRST, THE TRUTH
College is rigorous.
The classes you take here will transfer to the “big schools” because they are the same.
It only makes sense, right?  Our classes transfer to the four-year schools.  The four-year schools accept them.  You get to go to a four-year school after Snow.  You get the idea?
WHAT’S HARD ABOUT IT ?
The reading: 100-150 pages per night.
The pace:  40 weeks of material in 15 weeks.
The writing:  essay questions, research writing, correct grammar, spelling, punctuation.
WHAT’S HARD ABOUT IT?
The homework:  2:1  This means one hour in the classroom equals two hours of study time per class.
The depth:  why, why, why ???
Freedom:  it’s all up to you.
Less flexibility:  no extra credit.
Unfamiliar vocabulary:  new words, big words.
THE GOOD NEWS
Smaller class sizes:  25-35 students per class.
Writing lab
Math lab
Study groups
Help sessions
Learning is rewarding!
MORE GOOD NEWS
The instructors at Snow College are here to teach.  They are not paid to do research or publish.  In fact, instructors at Snow College are real professors, not graduate students.  Many have more than twenty years of teaching experience, and most are very helpful in cases where students need extra help after class.
Free Advice TIP # 5
Paranoia is your friend
Details, details, details
To succeed in college, your level of awareness needs to increase.  Manage your time, check and re-check details, and read the small print.  Don’t count on hearsay or roommates for important details.  Check it out yourself!
Free Advice TIP # 6
Attendance is required
Attendance is expected
What is a “UW”
If you miss class often, teachers can drop you from the class. This is a UW and is an UNOFFICIAL WITHDRAWAL. If you have a UW you’ll need to OFFICIALLY withdraw from the class.  To do this you need a drop card with your teacher’s signature. If you don’t drop the class your grade will be E. (E is an F).  Refer to page 18 of the catalog for more details or contact the Academic Advisement Office.
“NO ONE TOLD ME!”
If you catch yourself saying this phrase we can help you put the blame in its appropriate place…In reality we work diligently to inform students. However, full responsibility falls on the student!  It’s like, welcome to college—heads up!
BE RESPONSIBLE TO INFORM YOURSELF
Know your deadlines:
Read the catalog and stay alert to fliers, e-mail, the KAGE, and marquee.
Read student e-mail:
Check this e-mail daily
Talk to your instructors:
By talking to your instructors you can help eliminate problems in the classroom.
WANT TO START SMART?
Start Smart is a one credit hour on campus orientation.
Start Smart begins Thursday, August 21.
You’ll have fun, make new friends, and learn important stuff about Snow College.
Past students definitely recommend Start Smart and so do we!
AP/Concurrent Credit
Snow College accepts both AP and concurrent enrollment.
Have your official transcript sent to Snow College.
If you have questions about duplicating GE requirements with your incoming credit, give us a call at 435-283-7313.
