artist statement

My art is very much a part of who I am - a visual reflection of my life. I am inspired to create by events that occur and that have occurred in my life as I evolve as a human being. I feel liberated by being able to bring these otherwise mundane experiences to a higher level of awareness through the use of the visual narrative. My mediums of choice tend to evolve around the disciplines of printmaking, drawing and the dynamic, multi-narrative platform of the artists' book. I enjoy the graphic nature of the marks that many of the traditional printmaking processes allow. Much of the content, stylistic and attitudinal influences in my work have evolved through research into the rich pedigree of artists throughout history-artists learning from each other. Teaching the chronological history of art has afforded me the opportunity to study this phenomenon in retrospect, sparking my curiosity to trace my own artistic lineage. Much of this influence may be immediately recognized formally. Other influences are nothing more than an inspirational catalysts to an idea, but nevertheless an engrained part of the work. As I research my rich artistic heritage and experiment with new ideas, my work continues to exist in a state of constant evolution-always remaining a student of my visual discipline.
