artist statement
There's a difference between looking and seeing. We spend most of our lives simply looking but seeing takes more thought because it includes an element of understanding. Art helps us see the world and each other, and that's when we learn. When I look at an artichoke I don't just look at it, I see it... its contours, its shapes, its colors, its shadows. I see that it is beautiful and incredible. I understand the artichoke. It's an amazing experience! In my paintings and drawings I try to recreate that kind of experience for the viewer. I want to show them how visually interesting and aesthetically pleasing our world really is, and maybe even teach them how to see.
There is a reason why I am an artist. Simply stated, it is because I am a human being. Like all of human kind I house a spirit that not only needs to do more than merely discover, but create. In creating, one can find meaning and begin the agonizing, yet wonderful process of self-knowledge.
Art expands into realms that other disciplines cannot. Through art the artist is able to pose and answer questions for herself as well as those around her. For me it's a way of making sense of myself in relation to the wisdom and knowledge, chaos and confusion of the world.
