Course Content and GE: Successful completion of this course fulfills the Physical Science GE requirement (you still need a science lab). This course is a conceptual approach to significant and universal laws and models describing the physical world; it includes components of physics, astronomy, chemistry, and earth science. This course is designed to introduce you to the concepts and methods of physical science, and to equip you to continue learning about science and to make better scientific decisions throughout your life.
Texts: Conceptual Physical Science 1st ed., by Hewitt, Suchocki, & Hewitt. (Note 1st edition.)
Other Materials: A calculator is recommended, but most of the math will be simple enough to not need one. You are responsible for information given over e-mail; if you use Eudora you will need a disk.
Prerequisites: Math 1010 or equivalent.
Homework: Homework will be assigned frequently; some may be assigned (and turned in) over e-mail. You are encouraged to study in groups to achieve understanding, but what you write on your paper must be your own work--don't turn homework in without understanding it. Homework is due at the end of the class period after it is assigned. Homework that is late for any reason other than a pre-approved legitimate excuse will be worth 50% up to one week late; thereafter no credit will be given. No late homework after April 16 will be accepted.
Participation: Ask questions in class (the more the better), come to office hours, go to the Math/Science Lab, help other students. You should also subscribe to the class e-mail list (LS-Brown) and participate in discussions there. If you are serious about this class the majority of your learning will take place outside of class time. Please expect to spend two hours outside of class for every hour in class.
Help: Tutors that can help you with physical science are often available in the Math/Science Lab (hours: M-R 10:30-9:30, F 10:30-4:30). Go there early and often. Please also work in groups; I strongly recommend this. You are encouraged to see me during my posted office hours (M-F 10:30-11:20) and at other times by appointment. If you need a special accommodation under the ADA for this class, please call Ivo Peterson at 283-7391.
Quizzes: Short frequent quizzes will help you stay caught up and keep you apprised of your progress.
Tests: There will be about four tests in the testing center before the final exam. Take your photo ID, a #2 pencil, and your calculator. Testing Center hours are M-R 9-9, F 9-5, Sa 12-4, Su 5-9.
Final Exam: April 28; 1:00-3:30; in the classroom. It will be comprehensive.
