Instructions for using e-mail (Eudora on Macintoshes)

Copy a folder called Eudora folder to your own (preferably Mac formatted) disk from the file server.
You must always start the e-mail program (Eudora) by double-clicking on the Eudora Settings file in the Eudora folder on your floppy disk.

The first time (not any subsequent times) you run the program you need to configure it for your account. That configuration will be saved in your settings file for future sessions. Pull down the Special menu to Settings and let go of the mouse button. You need to fill in only two boxes on the getting started screen. Put your e-mail address in the first box labeled POP account. It is composed of your username followed by @mail.snow.edu. Your username is the first four letters of your last name followed by the month and day of your birth (two digits each). The format would be AAAAmmdd@mail.snow.edu and an example might look like SMIT1204@mail.snow.edu. Type your full name in the box labeled Real Name. Click OK. Your copy of the Eudora folder is now set up for your account on the student file server. You can run Eudora from any networked Mac by double-clicking on the settings file on your floppy disk. Your mail will be saved on your floppy disk as well (be sure you have Eudora set up to keep copies of outgoing mail). You must quit Eudora before you can drag your disk to the trash.

To retrieve (download) your messages from the file server to your disk so you can read them, go to the File menu down to where it says Check Mail. (Eudora will ask you for your password (which is your whole SSN without dashes). You will see some messages flash across the screen as it checks for mail. If you have new messages your In mailbox will open and show you a list of the messages. Double-click on one to read it. Then you can experiment with all of the different options in the different menus (you can't hurt the machine‹‹the worst that can possibly happen is that you'll lose the mail messages‹‹so just try stuff). It may be helpful to turn on balloon help by going to the help menu in the upper right corner of the screen and pull down to Show Balloons. This will cause a "balloon" window of extra information to appear describing anything the mouse arrow points at. After you learn your way around Eudora you can turn the balloon help off by using the same menu to Hide Balloons.

To send a message pull down the Message menu to New Message. Type the address of the recipient in the To: line. You can tab or use the mouse to move to the Subject: line; type a few-word synopsis of the message. Tab or mouse down to the body of the message and type away. Once your message is composed you actually send it on its way by clicking on the Send button in the upper right corner of the window.

You may communicate with me privately by mailing to Larry.Smith@snow.edu and I can write back. Please include the name of your class in the Subject: line of any message you send to me so I can sort my mail.

Subscribing to mailing lists

To subscribe to the class e-mail list send a message to listserv@lists.snow.edu. You need not fill in the subject line for this message because it will be read by a program, not a person. In the main body of the text type a one-line message saying "subscribe LS-color <Your Real Name>" (without the quotes or the <> signs, and where color is a color that corresponds to your class as mentioned in class; e.g.,
subscribe LS-beige John Doe). Click the Send button and then Check Mail again for confirmation of your subscription. You should have a message saying you are on the class list.
Now any message you send to LS-color@lists.snow.edu will go to the whole list (everyone in the class). Remember, send to listserv@lists.snow.edu to get on or off the list, but send to LS-color@lists.snow.edu to add to the class discussion. You will need to get off the list at the end of the quarter by sending a one-line message to listserv@lists.snow.edu saying "unsubscribe LS-color" (no quotes). I will be subscribed to the same list and you will be evaluated on how much you participate in the discussion.

If you get a message from the mailing list (or anyone else for that matter) that you would like to reply to, pull down the Message menu to Reply. It will automatically fill in the To: line and the Subject: line; you just type the body.
