UTAH HIGH SCHOOLS COME TO SNOW FOR MATH COMPETITION

Timpview, Uintah, Richfield and North Summit Earn First Place Awards

EPHRAIM, Utah—April 10, 2006—EPHRAIM, Eighteen Utah high schools visited Snow College last week to participate in the math department’s annual competition. The competition included 159 students – mostly juniors and seniors, who were administered an exam designed to challenge even the students taking calculus.

“This is a difficult competition. Our exam tests the skills of high school freshmen all the way to high school seniors in advanced math,” said Kari Arnoldsen, chair of Snow’s math department. “Each year we are extremely impressed with the caliber of students in each division.”

Snow divides the competitors into four divisions based on school size. Timpview High School was the division four or large schools winner. They not only had the highest score in the competition but three Timpview students were the top three finishers in the division.

Uintah High School finished first in division three, Richfield High School took first in division two and North Summit High School took home the top honor in division one. Richfield has a tradition of excellence in the competition as does Manti High, which finished second in division two.

The top three students in each division receive scholarship offers from Snow College. Four of those twelve live within the six-county area Snow serves. Jacob Hedelius from Manti, Andy Hurd from Richfield and Joseph Wilcox from Juab were the top three finishers in division two. Seung Han Jang from Wasatch Academy was the top student in division one.

Following the competition, Snow’s science and math departments hosted over 50 of the students at a lunch and presentation about the department.

Snow College
Snow College, founded in 1888, serves approximately 3,000 students at its Ephraim campus. The college provides general education and applied technology programs leading to Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Pre-Engineering degrees, and certificates of completion in a number of occupational areas. Once owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Snow College became a state college in 1932.
