JUILLIARD AND SNOW COLLEGE TEAM UP FOR JAZZ WORKSHOP
Rhythm Section Workshop will be held July 21-23 at Snow College
EPHRAIM, Utah—June 16, 2005-Snow College today announced that the Juilliard School jazz faculty will teach a rhythm section workshop July 21-23 in the Eccles Center for the Performing Arts on Snow's Ephraim campus. Musicians interested in attending must audition for the workshop by submitting a CD or cassette recording demonstrating their musical talent. Tuition for the three-day workshop is $395. For more information or to register, musicians may call Snow's Horne School of Music at (435) 283-7472 or e-mail Vance Larsen at vance.Larsen@snow.edu. Additional information is available at www.snow.edu/~music/jazzworkshop.
The workshop features one-on-one and small group interaction with some of the finest jazz performers and teachers in the world. Each day, students will participate in master classes, group rehearsals and evening performances. There will be a faculty performance the first day followed by student performances and jam sessions the final two evenings.
"The workshop is designed to address the fundamental issues, the role, function and concerns of the rhythm section in a jazz context," said Carl Allen, Juilliard faculty member. "We will approach it from a historical and conceptual perspective where there will be a lot of listening, playing and interacting with one another."
The workshop was actually the brainchild of Dan Jorgensen, a member of Snow's foundation, whose wife, Elaine, is a graduate of Juilliard and professor of music at Snow. Dan met with a Juilliard faculty member who mentioned an interest in finding a western outpost to teach Jazz and other musical disciplines. One discussion led to another and now one of the finest performing arts schools worldwide will have a presence in Utah.
"This is an unbelievable opportunity for Utah musicians to learn how to play like the pros," said Vance Larsen, dean of performing arts at Snow College. "We think we have the perfect workshop. Students get significant one-on-one teaching from the best jazz performers and teachers in one of the finest performing arts facilities in the State."
