FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
STEVE COBURN NAMED HEAD COACH OF BADGER FOOTBALL TEAM
Titan Trimble Tenders Resignation Following Big Bowl Victory Over Butler
EPHRAIM, Utah—December 13, 2005—EPHRAIM, Utah—Snow
College named Steve Coburn its head football coach Monday after Titan Trimble
tendered his resignation. Coburn, Snow’s defensive coordinator for the
past six seasons, is the architect of one of the finest defenses in junior college
football for the past three seasons. Snow just completed a season culminating
in a 17-14 bowl victory over Butler Community College, a 10-2 record and the
8th spot in the NJCAA Top 20. Trimble leaves Snow after just one season at the
helm.
“It was immediately clear to me who should be our new head coach,”
said Bob Trythall, Snow’s athletic director. “Coach Coburn has not
only held the defense together during a coaching change, he made it better.
We have an excellent staff of coaches and every one of them wholeheartedly supports
Steve. He is committed to this College and to this community.”
Coburn began his career at Ricks College as a graduate assistant coaching the
defensive line for two seasons. He then spent 16 years – eight as an assistant
and eight as a head coach, in the Utah high school ranks. Coburn was a head
coach at Morgan, Ogden and Cottonwood high schools and served as president of
the Utah High School Football Coaches Association during that time.
“Utah high school athletes are our lifeblood. Look at any Snow roster
going back decades and you’ll see that we were and are the school that
gives Utah football players an opportunity to keep playing and keep improving,”
remarks Coburn. “I think that my relationships with high school coaches
will help us find even more talent in the Utah high school ranks.”
Coburn has a reputation as a terrific defensive game planner and coach. The
reputation has been rightfully earned over the past six seasons at Snow and
during his eight years as a defensive coordinator in the high school ranks.
Coburn also gained significant offensive training as a high school head coach.
In each of his head coaching positions, offensive play calling went through
him. Coburn favors an offensive philosophy similar to what Norm Chow ran at
Brigham Young University and then USC.
“My resume is what it is – my most significant background is on
the defensive side; but being a defensive coach has given me an important perspective
on offensive strategy and play-calling,” explains Coburn. “I’ve
also been a head coach – I’ve been responsible for the end result
both offensively and defensively. I love the challenge of bringing Snow’s
offense up to the same standard the defense has set over the past few seasons.
I think that Snow has the coaching staff, and most important, the players to
do it.”
Snow’s staff from this season will remain intact under Coburn and he’ll
try to add a couple of position coaches during the off-season. Justin DeCol
will move from special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach to defensive
coordinator. Tyler Hughes will continue as offensive coordinator.
“The coordinators will game plan and call the plays for every game. I’ll
be involved on both sides of the ball but Justin and Tyler are terrific coaches
who’ve worked hard and have earned the opportunity,” says Coburn.
“I thought Titan did a nice job letting the coaches coach and I’ll
do the same. I will be responsible for special teams, deciding fourth down calls
(punt, kick, go for it, etc.) and game management issues.”
John Hunter will continue coaching the offensive line and Jason Ah You will
return as defensive line coach. Both coaches have developed all-league and All-American
players over the past few seasons including: Victory Haines and James Farrelly
this season, CJ Ah You last year and Deuce Lutui in 2004. Lutui, an offensive
tackle for USC, was just named a second-team All-American.
