6th-ranked Badgers to Face 11th-ranked Georgia
Military on December 6th
EPHRAIM, Utah—November 18, 2003—Snow College today announced that the football team has accepted an invitation to play in the Sea Island Golden Isles Bowl against Georgia Military (Bulldogs) Saturday, December 6 in Brunswick, Georgia. Snow’s athletic director, Bob Trythall, and head coach, Jeff Kilts, attended the official announcement in Brunswick while Snow’s president, Michael T. Benson, shared the news in a campus news conference. This will be the first time Snow has ventured east of the Mississippi for a post-season appearance.
“Our players, coaches and fans have earned this opportunity,” said Benson. “It takes hard work, talent and character to put together an excellent team and all three have been evident to me with this year’s squad since spring ball. We’ve also been thrilled with the fan support this season. Parents, students and the community have filled Badger Stadium and given us a ‘twelth man’ at home.”
The bowl is a match-up of two top teams in the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA). Snow is 6th and Georgia Military 11th in the final regular season NJCAA poll. Both teams have won national titles – Snow in 1985 and Georgia Military most recently in 2001. Georgia Military returns to the Golden Isles Bowl for the 7th time in the last 9 years. This year marks the third straight appearance for the Bulldogs and the first for the Badgers. Snow’s last appearance in a bowl game was in a losing effort to Ricks College in the Real Dairy Bowl in December 2000.
Snow sports the 2nd-rated passing offense in the NJCAA averaging 446 yards a game (4th-rated offense overall). Badger quarterback, Jason Coutts, is 2nd in passing and total offense. He’s thrown for 2,539 yards – an average of 282 yards-per-game, and 27 touchdowns. Brian Romney, Snow’s top receiver, is the 9th-rated receiver in the country with 43 catches, 687 yards and 5 touchdowns.
In contrast, Georgia Military is the NJCAA’s 3rd best defense giving up only 181 yards-per-game – 106 passing and 75 rushing. The Bulldogs offense is rated 9th in the NJCAA – averaging 370 yards-per-game. They rush for 196 yards-per-game and are led by Brent Thomas with 993 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.
Snow will prepare for the bowl game over the next three weeks, leave for Brunswick on Thursday, December 4 and return Saturday, December 6 immediately after the game. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. EST.
