EPHRAIM, Utah—April 26, 2004—Snow’s football team will close out spring practice this Friday, April 30 at 12:30 p.m. in Badger Stadium with a scrimmage featuring many players that will start this fall. The scrimmage will last 60 to 90 minutes and is free to the public. The Badgers have a tough task next season – topping a 4th-ranked finish in the NJCAA poll, Garden Isles Bowl victory and shared conference championship.
“We’re ahead of where we were at this point last year,” said Jeff Kilts, Badger head coach. “We have a lot of starters back from last year and previous years and our quarterbacks aren’t making as many mistakes as we typically see this time of year.”
As it is every year, quarterback will be a critical position for the Badgers. Gone is Jason Coutts who threw for 2,539 yards last season – leading a passing attack that ranked second in the NJCAA. Four of five quarterbacks vying for the starting spot will play Friday including Joey Edmunds, Jon Mann, James Pritchard and Cade Cooper. Travis Henderson will not play due to an illness. Coach Kilts will not pick a starter until August.
A number of offensive players return for sophomore seasons. Wade Clyde at offensive guard and Brett Johanson at tight end will anchor the offensive line. Kevin Tallman, a 6’4” wide receiver, will need to lead a receiving corps depleted by departures of Ameen Shaheen, Brian Romney, Luke Carter and Justin Walker. Todd Daniels returns at running back after red shirting a year. Daniels started in 2002 and will compete with Kaseme Griffin and Landon Beus, back from an LDS mission, for playing time.
Snow’s defense will be anchored by sophomore lineman Derek Beardall and Jeremy Cowart. Returning defensive backs Quincy Wallin, Blake Trythall, Brandon Webb and Arimus Peoples will also bolster the defense. Ty Sparrow, an all conference safety in 2001 returns from an LDS mission.
Snow’s 2004 schedule may be the toughest in junior college football. The
Badgers have four home and six away games. Home games include Dixie State and
Glendale, perennial conference championship contenders. Away games include
Georgia Military, who Snow defeated in the Garden Isles Bowl, and strong
conference opponents New Mexico Military, Pima and Arizona Western.
