STUDENTS SHOW OFF FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS AT SNOW COLLEGE

90 Students Compete in Spanish and French Contests

EPHRAIM, Utah—April 9, 2004—Ninety high school students participated in a language fair at Snow College Monday, March 22. Students tested their knowledge of French or Spanish in five different events. Snow faculty and students conducted the contests for two levels of students – two years or less and three years or more of a foreign language.

“We want to give foreign language students the opportunity to use their language and be recognized for it,” said Sheryl James, chair and professor of Snow’s language department. “It’s also a way to acquaint them with the students, faculty and facilities at Snow.”

Fair events included a speech competition, poetry recitation, a culture bowl where students are asked about cultures related to their chosen language, a talent and skit competition and general excellence exam. The majority of students participating came from Richfield and Gunnison high schools.

“This will be an annual event held at either Snow’s Ephraim or Richfield campuses. We hope to attract many more students next year,” said James.
