Center Completion is Moved Forward from Original Projection
EPHRAIM, Utah—May 28, 2002—Snow College today announced that Layton Construction will build the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Center for the Performing Arts. A committee of four people, including Snow College president, Michael Benson, evaluated bids from 11 construction companies May 15-16. Layton Construction was chosen and notified by the committee on May 17.
The significant factor in Layton’s winning bid was a commitment to finish the performing arts center by August 1, 2003 within the budget Snow has been given for the building. Snow’s original estimate of project completion was January 1, 2004. Construction of the building will begin June 3.
Layton exceeded Snow’s expectations with two other commitments. The firm will provide additional tunneling out from the building in anticipation of future college growth. In addition, Layton will demolish and remove the Crane Theatre from Snow’s Ephraim campus.
Two Layton employees will move to Ephraim until project completion. They are: Brian Hobbs, project manager and Lyle Miller, project superintendent. Layton has committed to use as many Sanpete County general contractors and sub-contractors as possible for the building.
“The George S. and Dolores Doré Center for the Performing Arts changes the complexion of central Utah. There is not another facility like this between Utah County and Cedar City,” said Michael Benson, president of Snow College. “The performing arts center will be the finest of any two-year institution in Utah and the surrounding states.”
The performing arts center will house the entire operations of Snow’s Maurine D. and M. Seth Horne School of Music and theatre arts programs. The building will be 89,000 gross square feet and includes a 700-seat performance hall, 500-seat theatre, experimental theatre, choral concert and rehearsal hall, two large classrooms, 8 regular classrooms, individual practice rooms, scene shop and faculty offices.
