PULVERIZE PILLOW FIGHT RECORD

1,706 Swing their way Into the Guinness Book of World Records

EPHRAIM, Utah—March 25, 2004—Snow College students and many people from throughout Sanpete County set a new unofficial world record for the largest pillow fight last night in Badger Stadium. The president of Snow College, Michael T. Benson, and the Jazz Bear were among the 1,706 people who pulverized the pillow fight record set at 1,076 by students at Duke University earlier this month. The numbers are unofficial until the Guinness Book of World Records approves the documentation Snow students prepared for the event.

The event was the brainchild of Monica Sheneman – a student leader at Snow College, who noticed that the University of Warwick had set the record at 967. But before Snow could hold the event, students at Duke University set a new record at 1,076 on March 5. Undeterred, Snow student leaders solicited the support of local radio stations and newspapers to encourage students and Sanpete County residents to break the record.

“We’re sure that many more [than 1,706] turned out for the event but we ran out of forms,” said Monica. “I knew we could break it but I never imagined we’d do it by so much [630]. Maybe we should do it again next year.”

This is the fourth time in less than a year that the pillow fight record has been broken. In November of 2003, 766 students at Oregon State broke the old mark of 645. Warwick University and Duke University took their turns and now Snow College has added significant pillows and people to the mark.

Next week, Snow College student leaders will submit documentation of the event to the Guinness Book of World Records.
