REMBRANDT EXHIBIT DISPLAYED
AT THE SNOW COLLEGE GALLERY OF ART
Original Etchings
Depict Old and New Testament Scenes
EPHRAIM,
Utah—November 4, 2004—Snow College today
announced that an exhibit of original Rembrandt etchings is currently displayed
in the Art Gallery located in the Humanities Building on the Ephraim campus.
The exhibit is free to the public and may be viewed between the hours of 9:00
a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday or by special arrangement. Call Adam
Larsen at 283-7416 with any questions or to schedule a private viewing.
The
exhibit consists of original Rembrandt etchings depicting scenes from the Old
and New Testaments as well prints made from the originals. Shawn Merriman, a
private collector, generously provided the collection to Snow College this
month.
“This
is an exhibit you see at the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York not in
Ephraim,” said Adam Larsen, Snow College gallery director. “We invite the
public to take advantage of this rare opportunity and view works from one of
the masters.”
Rembrandt
van Rijn
Rembrandt van Rijn is revered as one of the greatest
artists in history. He was born in the
Dutch town of Lyden in 1606 and began his artistic career at the age of
14. By the age of 22 he had students of
his own, and he settled permanently in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1631. Known
widely as a painter, Rembrandt enjoyed early success in his artistic
aspirations but it was his dynamic use of the printmaking medium of etching
which brought him an international reputation.
Rembrandt became a master of
the reproductive printmaking process of etching and his prints became a
commodity for collectors even during his lifetime. Rembrandt experimented with more than 300 etchings during his
prolific career and is considered in many circles to be the pinnacle artist of
the medium. He took advantage of the
flexibility that the etching process allowed by reworking plates, sometimes
multiple times, to achieve the desired results.
Rembrandt defined etching as
a viable and lustrous medium for portraiture, landscape, figurative, and to
represent religious narratives. The images
presented here allow visual insight into Rembrandt’s dynamic versions of
stories from the Old and New Testaments.
