Historic Tile Painting Workshop

This new and exciting 3-day workshop is being taught at Traditional Building Skills Institute. In recent years, a remarkable revival of interest in decorative tiles has taken place.

This course offers a hands-on workshop where students will learn the ancient art of making and decorating ceramic tiles. The hand decorating of ceramic tiles, which heretofore has been a predominantly European tradition, is rarely taught in the United States. Most clay artists consider this technique to be a proprietary skill, seldom sharing their knowledge with others.

This is your opportunity to learn and have a thorough understanding of the manufacture and history of tile making and tile decorating. The student will learn how to adapt any design and transfer it using mylar and special copy paper. The student will become very familiar with all phases of hand decorating, including using the "banding wheel", special brushes for specific designs and finally, different glazes for different effects.

Best of all, you will come away from this workshop having learned a valuable new skill, a skill that does not require special studio space or hard-to-obtain materials. Any ceramic shop in your area is happy to fire your finished tiles for a small fee.
