Matthew Phillipson

Matthew Phillipson, the owner of Kelly Classical Woodcarving in Shirley, Massachusetts, has been carving wood for over 12 years. He trained with British Master Carver Ian Agrell, one of only 40 British Master Carvers in the world, for three years learning the skills and sense of design necessary to execute good carving. Focusing primarily on architectural carving, he has carved pieces in a variety of styles ranging from the classical to gothic naturalistic.

Following a tour in the United States Army, Matthew founded Kelly Classical Woodcarving in 2004 with the goal of producing high quality woodcarving on a custom basis. His recent work includes carving restoration on historic houses, new commissions for private residences, and collaboration with renowned artist Jerry Beck for the Charleston Navel Yard. He has also taught classes in wood carving for the continuing education program at a local Technical High School.
