Historic Landscape Preservation

This workshop, taught by Susan Crook, is a hands-on introduction to the theory and practice of historic landscape preservation.

Instruction includes visits to historic properties in Sanpete County to de-construct historic landscapes by examining and documenting landscape features to scale.

Participants will attempt to determine the origin of the materials and building methods based on their experience and knowledge. They will also apply what they learn by helping to construct a landscape feature.

Instruction will also include an introduction to the natural landscape around the historic Great Basin Research Station now the Great Basin Environmental Education Center (GBEEC) located in the Manti-Lasal National Forest, 8 miles up Ephraim Canyon.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Recognize historic landscape by type

Inventory landscape features

Use selected traditional landscape construction methods

Definitions

Spatial arrangement and layout

Character defining features

Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS)

Existing conditions inventory and assessment

Construction materials and methods

Maintenance planning

The Cost for this Workshop is $300.

Options include:

$25 for two evening meals, Thursday and Friday, catered at the Center,

logding at the Great Basin Environmental Education Center at $25. per night
