LAB TEXT: Slowinski, Wolsey, and Masterton, Chemistry Principles in the Laboratory, Seventh Edition

PREREQUISITES: Registration in Chem 1210

PURPOSE OF COURSE: The labs will be designed to teach laboratory skills such as problem solving, observation, measurements, calculations, minimizing errors, and the use of lab equipment. Most labs will relate to material that has been covered in Chem 1210. In the first lab session you will check-in to your lab drawer and clean and organize your equipment. You will also receive instructions on safety and laboratory procedures that you will need to know.

GRADING POLICY: Your Lab work will be evaluated as follows:
Labs 55 % About half of your score will come from setting up and doing the experiment thoughtfully, and about half from the accuracy and precision you obtain on your experiment
Pre-Lab 15 %There will be an advanced study assignment due at 1:30 PM on the monday before we start each experiment. This assignment will give you experience in working with the type of data you obtain in the lab, and help you to understand the purpose and principles of the experiment.
Lab techniques 5 %Safety, clean-up and courtesy in the lab.
Midterm & Final 25% A test given on the experiments conducted and basic skills learned in lab this semester.

ATTENDANCE: No make-up labs will be offered. If you are ill on the day of the lab, and you can possibly attend another lab session, clear this with me ahead of time. Because it is not possible to make-up a lab, your lowest lab day will be dropped.

CALCULATORS:
You will use a calculator in almost every experiment. Because your completed lab with calculations are due at the end of each lab session, bring a calculator to every lab.

HELP: Please ask for help if you have studied the lab and still do not understand the material in the advanced study assignment or the lab procedures.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Students with medical, psychological, learning or other disabilities desiring accommodations, academic adjustments, or auxiliary aids will need to contact the Disability Resource Center, room 203 Noyes Building, phone number (435)283-7244. The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator at the Disability Resource Center (DRC) determines eligibility for and authorizes the provision of appropriate services and aids.
