Recruiting an Advisor and their Role

The Role of an Advisor:
A. Each student club must have a college advisor whose role is to assist the club in providing educational experiences for the individual members in keeping with college procedures.

1.  The advisor must be a member (or spouse member) of the faculty or staff of the college.
2.   The appointment of a faculty or staff member must be approved by his/her immediate supervisor. Faculty spouses may serve as club advisors. Their approval must come, in writing form the Director of Student Leadership and Service.
3.   In unique circumstances, an off-campus advisor can be approved for a Snow College club. These off-campus advisors must be reviewed by the Director of Student Leadership and Service and the Dean of Students. All advisors will be required to attend advisors meetings when necessary.

B. The advisors role and responsibility consists of the following:

1.   Support the mission of Snow College as well as college policy, including Student Rights and Responsibilities (this includes acting in a responsible and ethical manner in response to student behavior that is not in accord with Snow College policy and/or conductive to an environment of higher learning.
2.   Interpret College policy and procedure to the club.
3.   Act as a resource in planning, organizing and implementing student group events (the advisor must attend the activity).
4.   Attend all club meetings.
5.   Serve as a liaison between the club and college administration.
6.   Assist in the proper expenditure of monies for club functions.

The success of any club is the responsibility of the members, not the advisor. Ideally, the advisor should train and counsel club members regarding the achievement of group and personal goals without controlling their actions.

C. Snow College policy requires that the advisor be present at all club activities, including off-campus functions

Before recruiting an Advisor keep in mind the following things:

  • You will need to find someone with the time to devote to your club.
  • You will want someone willing and motivated to be your advisor.
  • You will want someone who has a knowledge or shows interest in your organization, its mission and purpose

When approaching the person for the first time, make sure that he or she has a good, clear understanding of your organization as well as the personal commitment desired by his or her role as an advisor. It is important that you are open and honest with the potential advisor about the types of activities in which he or she would need to participate.
