How Do I Qualify For Utah Residency?
Most students must meet the following criteria:
- Complete 60 semester credit hours at a regionally accredited Utah higher education institution while residing in Utah, OR
- Live in Utah for 24 or more months as a non-student prior to being admitted to a Utah institution of higher education, AND
- Be able to provide evidence of permanency.
- Example: Utah Drivers License, Utah voter registration, Utah banking account, vehicle registered and licensed in Utah, rent receipts, pay stubs, etc. Make copies of this documentation to accompany the application for resident status.
Other ways to qualify for Residency:
- A family moves to the state for work-related purposes. There are specific requirements relating to this qualification which can be reviewed on the Utah Board of Regents Residency Page (see section 4.1.3).
- One or both parents resides in Utah and the student is under 24 years of age.
- A Utah resident leaves the state (after graduating from high school) and returns within 48 months, but has not received resident status at an out-of-state college or university.
- A student is receiving tuition assistance from a Utah state government agency (i.e. vocational rehabilitation, workforce services, etc). Eligibility is maintained while receiving assistance.
- Missionary Service. Time spent in Utah prior to serving a church mission can be added to time after mission as long as student returns to Utah within 30 days after completion of mission.
- Marriage to an established Utah resident. Must provide copy of marriage license, Utah Drivers License of both parties, etc.
- U.S. military personnel on active duty in Utah, and their dependents residing with them, qualify for resident tuition. After terminating active duty, their residence is determined in the same way as other students.
- American Indians are considered Utah residents if they appear on the rolls of a tribe having at least some reservation or trust land within Utah or whose reservation or trust land has a border contiguous with Utah. Members of federally recognized Utah tribes who have a Utah high school diploma also qualify for resident status.
