Catalog Description: This course will instruct students on the basic operation, repair, and adjustment of the diesel truck and trailer brake systems and includes hydraulic theory, air brake theory, diagnosis, and service of brake systems. The course provides theory on drums, disks, power units, and Antilock Braking System (ABS) brakes. Corequisite: This lecture DMT 1501 must be taken concurrently with the lab DMT 1505.

Justification: This course is required for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Education Foundation accreditation. It is approved by the program advisory committee. It is a core course for the Diesel Technology AAS degree


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will understand brake system theory and the requirements for the proper operation of a braking system. Students will be assessed by completion of quizzes and chapter review questions.

Students will learn about the appropriate specialized tools for brake system diagnosis and repair. Students will be assessed by completion of quizzes and chapter review questions.

Students will understand the appropriate steps to disassemble and reassemble a brake system.  Students will be assessed by completion of quizzes and chapter review questions.

Pedagogy Statement:
This is a lecture class taught in conjunction with a lab, DMT 1505. Students will be taught using lecture, discussion, demonstration, and hands-on activities.
