Catalog Description: This course teaches beginning-level American Social Dance including Foxtrot, Waltz, Swing and Cha Cha. Emphasis is placed on correct rhythm, poise, footwork, dance position, leading and following, technique and etiquette.

Credit/Time Requirement: Credit: 1; Lecture: 1; Lab: 1

Justification: Dance is a physical activity that stimulates personal fitness and wellness in personal lifestyle through strength, flexibilty, endurance, and coordination.


Student Learning Outcomes:
dance each of the dances using correct rhythm, dance positions and poise. This will be assesed through class participation and attendance. 

demonstrate communication skills, poise and social etiquette through leading and following while learning and performing different dance steps. Exams, quizzes and projects will demonstrate student understanding.  

demonstrate increased strength, flexibility, endurance and coordination. Strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination will be evaluated by instructor observation of student performance presentations focusing on understanding and display of various forms of social dance. 


Content:
Students will be introduced to the following dances and concepts: Foxtrot; Waltz; Swing; Cha Cha; Leading/Following; Posture; Step execution; Rhythm; Style; Performance


Key Performance Indicators:
Class participation and attendance demonstrating correct rhythm, dance positions and poise. (50-55% of total grade) 

Students will be evaluated by dance presentation for each dance studied. (20-25% of total grade)  

Exams, quizzes and projects will demonstrate student understanding of communication skills, poise and social etiquette through leading and following while learning and performing different dance steps. (20-25% of total grade) 

Strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination will be evaluated by instructor observation of student performance presentations focusing on understanding and display of various forms of social dance.
