Catalog Description: Through the process of completing a pieced quilt, students will apply design principles and elements and learn and practice sewing skills. Students will also be introduced to contemporary and historical textiles.

Justification: Sewing is a valuable life skill. This course gives students an opportunity to build skills that may be transferred to entrepreneurial endeavors. It satisfies interest in using fabric as an outlet of artistic expression. It gives students an option for an elective course.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Express their design preferences by choosing fabrics with a variety of color, value, pattern and scale.  Completion of this objective will observed as students create quilt blocks which will be assigned and evaluated by the instructor.

Demonstrate computational skills by using the rotary cutter and mat to accurately cut fabric shapes, and by allowing an accurate 1/4 in. seam allowance.  This will be observed as students produce consistent sized quilt blocks which will be evaluated by the instructor.

Demostrate their ability to operate a home sewing machine and quilting machine.  Students will piece a quilt top and complete quilting on the long arm machine. This will be observed and evaluated by instructor.

Demonstrate that they can identify the intrinsic value of personally designed textiles.  Complete a research assignment on a historical or heirloom quilted piece, which will be evaluated by the instructor and then presented to the class.


Content:
This course will include the study and application of• Making fabric choices• Operating the domestic sewing machine and the long arm quilting machine• Use of materials and products available to the quilt maker• Various techniques used in piecing quilt blocks• Methods of appliqué• Assembling quilt blocks and adding borders• Backing, quilting and binding the quilt• Documenting the quilt* Researching a family heirloom or historical quilt

Key Performance Indicators:
Students will be assessed by two or more of the following Key Performance Indicators:

Make fabric choices using a variety of color, value, pattern and scale: 5 to 10%

Make at least nine quilt blocks that finish to 12 in., assemble them using sashing and posts, and then add a border to the pieced quilt top: 50 to 60%

Complete a quilt top using the home sewing machine and quilt the piece using the long arm quilting machine: 20 to 30%

Identify a historical or heirloon quilted piece and research its significance to the maker and to those who appreciate the artistic expression of the maker, then present to the class: 10 to 20%

Teacher provides materials for instruction; students provide quilting supplies. No text required.


Pedagogy Statement:
Students will be taught using group demonstrations and individual specialized instruction. There are many skills that can be discussed and demonstrated using a camera and projecting the image onto a large screen TV.
