Arts & Crafts

  • Pencil: Any 2B will do. A kneaded eraser is optional, but suggested.
  • SketchBook: or blank paper for sketching.
  • Paper: Cold-Press 140lb-300lb. You can purchase a full sheet (22 x 30") and I can help you rip it into appropriate sizes or you can get a watercolor paper block- 8"x10" and up to about 12"x16". NOTE: If you are using sheets of paper, you will need a board to tape your paper to. DO NOT buy beginner-grade watercolor paper from Walmart.
  • Paints:They must be tubes; any brand will do, as long as they are of good quality (not student quality). Price check online sites such as Cheap Joe's, Jerry's Artarama, Amazon, etc... Look for coupons! Suggested colors- you don't need all, but at least one of each hue is required. Generally, artists like to have a warm and cool version of each color. That's what I've provided here.
    • Yellows Cadmium Yellow, Hansa Yellow
    • Reds Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson
    • Blues Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue
    • Earth Tones Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna
    • Greens Sap Green, Phthalo Green
    • Darks Payne's Gray or Neutral Tint
    • Optional Colors Quinacridone Violet, Manganese Blue Hue, Cobalt Turquoise
  • Palette: You need space for your individual colors, but plenty of empty space for mixing. Should be white.
  • Brushes: Make sure they are for watercolor Big brushes- 1 inch flat for washes, 14 and 18 squirrel mops with pointed tips. Medium brushes- 12 to 8 rounds with pointy tips Small brushes- any small detail brush will do.
  • Water Container: No tiny cups. Don't spend money on this. A large empty yogurt container or old ice cream container works great!
  • Rag or Soft Paper Towels to wipe brushes on.
  • Spray Bottle: optional (small droplets of water)
  • Masking or Painters Tape
