Painting the Landscape En Plein Air

Course Description: 

This workshop will focus on the stages of development for a plein air landscape sketch.  We will discuss and learn about preliminary drawings, the ebauche lay-in and how to build up a landscape sketch considering elements of atmosphere, impression and form.  We will discuss accuracy in drawing, value and tone and color harmony.  We will cover materials including materials used throughout history and what is available for artists to use today, including painting surfaces, brushes, oil colors and mediums.  Students will get daily personal critiques to help with their individual needs.

Biography: 

Ryan S. Brown received his BFA in illustration from Brigham Young University in 2002.  In 2003 Ryan studied drawing at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, after which he opened his own drawing school, the Classical Drawing Academy, which operated from 2003-06.  From 2004-2006 Ryan also taught at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, BYU, and Utah Valley University.  In 2007 Ryan returned to Florence to finish his painting studies, graduating in 2008.  Ryan won “Painting of the Year” and the President’s Award his final year at the FAA.  Upon his return from Florence in 2008, Ryan opened the Center for Academic Study & Naturalist Painting (CAS).  This school has received Art Renewal approval and more information can be found at www.cas-utah.com or at www.artrenewal.org.  Students at the CAS have won top awards in the ARC Scholarship competition and the Alpine Fellowship.  Ryan has won top honors in the Stacey Scholarship, Art Renewal Center Scholarship and has won an Award of Exceptional Merit in the 2010 Portrait Society of America competition.  He has had numerous articles published on his work in American Artist Magazine, American Art Collector Magazine, International Artist Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, Art of the West and Soutwest Art Magazine.
