General Information

Compensation:

  • Free Private bedroom in one of the on-campus Residence Halls
  • Plus a $600 Leadership Scholarship per semester

Duration: 2024-2025 Academic Year (Aug 17, 2024 - May 7, 2025)

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Snow College GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Be a current, full time Snow College Student
    • Incoming freshman are not considered for this position
  • Previous leadership experience preferred, but not required
  • High moral character and work ethic
  • A love for Snow College and a desire to mentor and support your peers!

Resident Assistant Responsibilities

Build Community
  • Plan and implement one (1) program/activity for students to socialize, build community, and learn successful life skills each Semester.
  • Develop positive relationships with residents in your hall/area with intentional conversations
  • Act as a resource to students with questions or concerns.
  • Promote and encourage an appreciation of diversity and encourage interactions among residents.
  • Promote the mission of Snow College and the Office of Residence Life.
  • Assess social and educational needs of residents and meet those needs with quality assistance.
Uphold Policy
  • Understand on-campus housing policies and how these rules promote successful living.
  • Be an example and correct or address policy infringement both in and around the Residence Halls. Complete incident reports where appropriate.
  • Participate in a nightly on-duty schedule that will include weekends and holidays.
  • Host regular floor meetings to orient and clarify expectations with residents.
  • Conduct Health & Safety inspections within Residence Halls twice each semester.
Administrative
  • Distribute fliers of Campus and Community events.
  • Maintain paperwork for resident check-in and check-out process, health and safety inspections, and other forms.
  • Assist Resident Director in addressing building needs.
  • Assist the Office of Residence Life in giving tours and other recruitment efforts for prospective residents.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, be enrolled in and attend the RA Class, and participate in semester trainings.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the difference between a Resident Assistant (RA) and a Resident Director (RD)?
    • Resident Assistants (RAs) live in different hallways throughout the Residence Halls. They act as extensions of the Office of Residence Life where they help residents check in and out of their rooms, help residents work through roommate conflict, plan activities, and help all students understand and follow both Residence Life and Snow College policy. RAs are on duty each night in the Residence Halls where they plan activities and act as a resource to students with questions or concerns. Each Residence Hall Community has 4-8 RAs. There is one Resident Director (RD) who oversees each Residence Hall community/area. The RD directly supervises the RA Staff in the building, along with managing all administrative duties of the building(s). RDs conduct weekly staff meetings with their RAs, along with working in the Office of Residence Life four hours each week.

  3. Can I choose what building I work in as an RA?
    • The Office of Residence Life determines which building you will work in; However, during the interview process you will be asked your preferences in buildings which is taken into consideration.
  4. What is a Cover Letter?
    • A Cover Letter is a letter of intent. A Cover Letter is typically addressed to the Selection Committee and explains why you are applying for the position and what qualifications you have that suggest you would do well in the position. Try to point out experiences and qualifications that are not already spelled out on your Resume to help the Hiring Committee get to know you and what makes you a good fit for the position. Cover Letters should not be more than one page.
  5. What is a Resume?
    • A Resume is a professional report of your experience, skills, and educational background. You will want to keep a clean and professional format, but be original! As you create your Resume it is important to review the job description. Use the job description as a type of checklist to make sure you point out how you meet each of the qualifications listed for the position. Resumes should be no more than one page.
  6. What kind of picture should I submit?
    • You should submit a semi-professional photo in color. Make sure it will help us recognize the candidate we meet in the interview process. Do not have anyone one else in the photo, must be a headshot. A nice photo with a smart phone will suffice. 
  7. How do I complete the Job Shadow? (not required for Spring RA applications)
    • Sign up for your RA Job Shadow in the Housing & Residence Life Office located in the Greenwood Student Center (GSC). On the day that you signed up for, show up to the residence hall you selected at 8:00PM and tell the RA on duty that you are there to shadow them. 
  8. What can I expect to do at the Group Process? (not required for Spring RA applications)
    • The Group Process is a sort of group interview. You will be put in a group with 5-6  other applicants and will be given tasks to accomplish together as a team. Each team will have a member of the Office of Residence Life staff observing them, but it is best to pretend they are not there. Be yourself! That is who we want to see and that is who we want to hire. Come ready to show energy, teamwork, and communication. Casual dress is appropriate at the Group Process. 
  9. What qualities do you look for in a Resident Assistant?
    • First-off, there is no such thing as a cookie-cutter RA. The students that attend Snow College come from different backgrounds, lifestyles, and cultures, so we want our Resident Assistant team to have that diversity too! We look for leaders; students we can trust to be an example, fulfill responsibilities and assignments, and connect with residents so that the mission of the Office of Residence Life can be accomplished!
  10. I currently live off-campus or have never lived on-campus before, can I still apply?
    • Yes! It is not required to have lived on-campus prior to being an RA. We value the opinions and experience that our RAs have had in the past who came from living off-campus their first year at Snow College.
  11. What if I have never had a job before, should I still apply?
    • Yes! Everyone has to start somewhere. As long as you are a trustworthy, hardworking student who meets enough of our qualifications, we would love to see you apply!
