Catalog Description: This course will help students improve their ability to swim and to build on their previous skills in the six different strokes: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke and sidestroke. The butterfly will be taught only in this course, not in Beginning Swimming. Students will also learn a competitive turn or open turn and an approach dive off the low-board. They will also be taught to swim fully clothed and use their clothes as a flotation device. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness.  Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes.  Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II dibetes, osteoperosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity.  Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression.  This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled. 


Student Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate beginning diving and safety in and out of the water These outcomes will be assessed on a final exam, practicum and/or class participation.

Demonstrate five basic swimming strokes by coordinating their arms, legs and breathing techniques These outcomes will be assessed on a final exam, practicum and/or class participation.

Explain the different swimming strokes and techniques These outcomes will be assessed on a final exam, practicum and/or class participation.

Demonstrate competitive turns These outcomes will be assessed on a final exam, practicum and/or class participation.


Content:
• Skills and techniques of swimming the front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke and sidestroke with proper arm, leg, and breathing coordination
• Introduction of the butterfly stroke
• Competitive turns
• Beginning diving
• Safety in and out of the water

This course will allow time to practice skills, perform assessments, etc. This course will value each participants effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with or fit into.
