Catalog Description: This course utilizes a variety of aerobic exercises, including step aerobics, to improve fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle. Repeatable for credit.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoperosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn proper aerobic workouts. This will be demonstrated through in-class participation.

Students will learn the value of aerobic exercise. This will be demonstrated through in-class participation.

Students will learn how to measure proper exertion level. This will be demonstrated through in-class participation.

Students will learn proper nutrition. This will be demonstrated through homework assignments and in-class participation.


Content:
Students will learn the following fitness/wellness principles:
• Proper and safe biomechanics of specific exercises and stretches.
• Basics of nutrition for a fit lifestyle.
• Fundamental fitness education
• Aerobic exercise
• Strength exercise
• Flexibility

Physical Education disciplines and Snow College athletic teams value human diversity. They will strive to represent that diversity in team/class materials and course content through examples, assignments, texts, etc.

Key Performance Indicators:
Students are evaluated on the following:

Homework 10 to 40%

Participation 20 to 50%

Attendance  30 to 60%

It is anticipated that this course will include physical demonstration and verbal instruction as well as time for assessments etc.

This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve, no matter the social category or demographic group they identify or fit into.
