Catalog Description: This class teaches first aid and lifesaving techniques. It is taught using curriculum from the Emergency Care and Safety Institute. (Additional fee required)

Justification: This course is requird for a variety of educational and professional programs. It is often a pre-requisit for employment. First aid skills are important for indivuduals to be able to assist one another during an emergency creating a greater appreciation for one another. Students who successfully complete this class will receive an Advanced First Aid and Adult, Child and Infant CPR/AED certificate.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn to identify injury and illness.  Regular quizzes and exams will assess student knowledge of injury and illness.

Students will learn appropriate first aid as it applies to a wide variety of conditions, including simple wound care, cardiac arrest, stroke and others.  Students will demonstrate knowledge of appropriate first aid conditions through hands-on practice and assessment (practicum).

Students will learn how to perform effective CPR and how to use an AED.  Students will be assessed through observation of CPR and AED use procedures. Regular attendance in class will be part of this assessment as those that attend class will have a high likelihood of achieving this outcome.


Content:
This course will cover first and lifesaving techniques. Topics taught in this course are:• Anatomy and function of body systems• Airway care• Patient assessment• CPR and AED use• Poisoning • Shock• Controlling bleeding• Soft tissue injury• Splinting for possible bone fractures • Injuries to muscle, bones and jointsThis course helps to address the need for individuals to be willing to assist people in need of CPR and first aid procedures. First aid involves caring for those around us in a professional manner but personalizing this care to the individual. This can lead to a greater appreciation for all people.

Quizzes and Exams 25 to 35%

Practicum 20 to 30%

Observation of CPR procedure and AED use 15 to 25%

Pedagogy Statement:
This course is taught by medical professionals who employ the use of lecture, slide presentations, video, personal experiences and practical hands on training. This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
