Catalog Description: This course offers an aerobic and muscle conditioning fitness class utilizing the Zumba program to improve fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoperosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
During this course, students will learn proper Zumba workouts and techniques. This will be assessed through in class exams.

The value of exercise and stretching will be measured along with proper exertion levels. This will be measured through pre and post fitness testing.

During the course, proper nutrition will be regularly measured. Attendance and journaling will be used to measure proper nutrition intake.


Content:
Students will participate and learn in an aerobics class format designed for cardiovascular, muscle, and flexibility conditioning. The Zumba program teaches easy-to-follow steps/movements to four basic Latin rhythms to create a fun and dynamic fitness program. Physical Education disciplines and Snow College value human diversity. This class will strive to represent that diversity in class materials and course content through examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

In-class exams 25 to 45%

Pre and post fitness testing 20 to 35%

Attendance and journaling 35 to 40%

No text required. Exertube used for strength and toning available in class.


Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught by lecture and lab which allows the students to learn and practice skills, as well as be assessed on knowledge of Zumba. Skills will be accessible to people of varying forms of abilities. This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
