Catalog Description: Weight Training is designed to help students understand the rules and strategies of weightlifting as well as help them improve their weightlifting skills and techniques. Students will learn to participate safely and effectively in weight training. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn proper weightlifting technique and skills. This will be assessed via in-class pre and post fitness and form testing.

Students will learn how to create a weightlifting program. This will be assessed via homework assignments.

Students will see personal physical growth in the weightlifting program as the semester progresses. This will be assessed by measuring incremental weightlifting progress during regular participatory class attendance.


Content:
This course will cover the fundamentals of weightlifting and the skills and knowledge of using the weight room. Topics covered will include structured weightlifting, safety, the use of free and machine weights and individualized programming. Physical Education disciplines and Snow College value human diversity. This class will strive to represent that diversity in class materials and course content through examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

Pre and Post Fitness Exam 25 to 35%

Homework Assignments 15 to 25%

Attendance  40 to 60%

Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught by lecture and lab which allows the students to learn and practice skills, as well as be assessed on knowledge of weightlifting. Skills will be accessible to people of varying forms of abilities. This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
