Catalog Description: This physical education activity class is designed to help students understand the rules and strategies of basketball, to help them improve their skills, and play safely and effectively. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Prerequisites: None

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn to perform the skills of basketball.  In-class pre and post skills testing at the beginning and end of the semester.

Students will have an extensive knowledge on basketball rules. This basketball course is designed to be based on fundamentals. The final exam will demonstrate their knowledge of basketball rules.

Basketball is a game of incremental increases. Students abilities will increase substantially if they regularly attend class and practice the sport. Students will be measured on their routine attendance. Regular attendance is required to achieve the outcome of increasing ability.


Content:
This course will cover the fundamentals of basketball skills and knowledge of the sport's rules. Topics will include rules, shooting, ball handling, defense, and team play. Physical Education disciplines and Snow College value human diversity. This class will strive to represent that diversity in class materials and course content through examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

Pre and Post Workout 30 to 40%

Final Exam 20 to 40%

Representative Text and/or Supplies:
Basketball shoes and activity clothes provided by student.


Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught by lecture and lab (on-court) which allows the students to learn and practice skills, as well as be assessed on knowledge of the rules of basketball. Skills will be accessible to people of varying forms of abilities. This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
