Catalog Description: Intermediate Volleyball is designed to help students understand the rules and strategies of volleyball, to help them improve their skills, and play safely and effectively. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Prerequisites: PE 1210 or instructor approval

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will improve the precision and accuracy of their volleyball skills.  Pre and post skills testing at the beginning and end of the semester will measure improved precision and accuracy volleyball skills.

Students will learn advanced volleyball strategies.  Written exams will measure students' knowledge of more advanced volleyball strategies.

Students will gain incremental growth and volleyball skill improvement with each class over the course of the semester. Volleyball skill improvement will be assessed by keeping attendance for every class and with a pre and post skills testing at the beginning and end of the semester.


Content:
This course will cover the fundamentals of volleyball, skills and knowledge of the sport's rules. This course will build upon the skills learned in Beginning Volleyball to improve the students' overall proficiency in the game of volleyball. Physical Education disciplines and Snow College value human diversity. This class will strive to represent that diversity in class materials and course content through examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

Topics covered in this course include:
• Review rules of volleyball, court markings, and safety factors
• Intermediate skills and strokes.
• Game strategy
• Preparing mentally for the game.

Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught by in a hands on lab setting (on-court) which allows the students to learn and practice skills, as well as be assessed on knowledge of the rules and skills of volleyball. Skills will be accessible to people of varying forms of abilities. This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
