Catalog Description: The student will learn and exhibit basic skills and correct fundamentals of beginning soccer. Students will improve cardiovascular endurance and develop physical fitness and skill. Students will be able to exhibit team effort and know the strategies and skill of playing soccer in a team setting. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoperosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to demonstrate the skills, fundamentals, and knowledge of the rules of soccer. Students will be assessed through in-class observation of soccer skills, fundamentals, and knowledge of the rules.

Students will be able to demonstrate the leadership qualities associated with playing as a team, including work ethic and attitude. Students will be assessed through in-class observation of leadership and assessment of work ethic, attitude and teamwork.

Students will be able to explain and discuss the use of physical conditioning techniques and training skills. Students will be assessed through in class practice oral quiz assessments on conditioning techniques and training skills.

Students will be able to show improvement in their soccer skills through the course of their semester. Student improvement will be assessed through their attendance/participation and pre and post assessment of soccer skills.


Content:
This activity course will cover all the fundamentals of soccer conditioning, skills, leadership and knowledge of the sport's rules. Physical Education disciplines and Snow College value human diversity. This class will strive to represent that diversity in class materials and course content through examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

Key Performance Indicators:
Students will be evaluated on:

In-class observation assessments of soccer skills and fundamentals, and knowledge of the rules.  25 to 30%

In-class observation assessments of leadership, work ethic, attitude & teamwork 20 to 30%

In-class oral quiz assessments  10 to 20%

Attendance 20 to 30%

Pre and post skill assessments 5 to 10%

Pedagogy Statement:
This activity class will be taught by lecture and lab which allows students to learn soccer skills and fundaments, as well as be assessed on leadership and teamwork, knowledge of the rules of soccer, conditioning techniques, etc. This activity course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve, no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
