Catalog Description: Advanced Swimming is a course that helps students improve their swimming skills with more advanced and competitive swimming strokes, including: freestyle, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly. The class will provide timed swims and a regular workout schedule. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Prerequisites: PE 1300 or Insructor approval

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn about and be able to demonstrate improved skills in the four advanced and competitive swimming strokes (freestyle, backcrawl, breaststroke, and butterfly) Students will be assessed with homework assignments, in-pool practicum, and final exam.

Students will learn about and be able to demonstrate the skills necessary to perform competitive turns and starts Students will be assessed with homework assignments, in-pool practicum, and final exam.

Students will learn about and be able to demonstrate skills in strokes, turns and diving. Students will be assessed with homework assignments, in-pool practicum, and final exam.

Students will be able to explain and discuss the physical benefits that swimming provides our body for exercise and relaxation. Students will be assess with homework assignments and final exam.



 


Content:
This course will teach students skills in competitive swimming and gain experience and knowledge in the following areas:

Swimming strokes
Swimming turns
Dives
Physical benefits of swimming

Physical Education disciplines value human diversity. This course will strive to represent that diversity in class materials and course content through examples, assignments, class discussions, etc.

Key Performance Indicators:
In-pool practicum 30 to 40%

Homework assignments  10 to 20%

Attendance  30 to 40%

Final Exam 10 to 20%

Preferably, students will have their own flippers, pull buoy and a kickboard, but if not, this equipment can be provided.


Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught primarily in the lab (pool) which allows the students to learn and practice advanced and competitive swimming and diving skills. This course will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
