Catalog Description: This course provides a rigorous experience in the process and practice of dance rehearsal and performance in a pre-professional dance team setting. Students perform jazz, hip-hop, lyrical and contemporary styles of dance during halftime periods of football and basketball games as well as other sporting events at Snow College. The group also supports other Snow College activities and performs on campus and in the community multiple times each semester. Audition Required. This course is repeatable for credit.

Corequisites: Students must be concurrently enrolled in at least one of the following courses: DANC 1100, 1130, 1200, 1230 or 2100


Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will improve in dance techniques such as ballet, hip hop, lyrical, jazz and contemporary. Students will be enrolled in at least 1 dance technique class concurrently with Badgerettes. Video analysis of each performance will help to improve each dance as the year progresses. This outcome will be measured by dance performances and attendance.

Students will develop teamwork. Students will work together both in small groups and as a team to perform dances. Instructor evaluation and video analysis will be used to improve their overall teamwork. This outcome will be measured by attendance and performances.

Students will develop leadership. Students will be given opportunities to choreograph dances for the team both individually and in groups. This outcome will be measured by dancers' attendance.

Students will perform with pride and show school spirit when representing Snow College. Students will dress according to team dress codes and be on time for all events and practices. This outcome will be measured by all performances and the dancers' dress and appearance while at live performances. These competitions will be recorded and reviewed for evaluation.


Content:
Students will learn the process of in-class rehearsal and performance in many settings. Students will learn to work with the instructor as well as professional guest artists of diverse backgrounds and cultures, thereby gaining important experience in rapid comprehension, retention of material and teamwork which lead to diverse instruction styles which will highlight each member's unique abilities and talents. Dance styles taught will include jazz, hip-hop, lyrical and contemporary. The importance of a performer's responsibilities will be stressed. The students will participate in sporting events including football and basketball games as well as other activities at the college and around the community. Each year the Badgerettes will schedule and promote their own concert.

Pedagogy Statement:
This course will be delivered through video analysis, teacher led dance instruction, student led choreography and guest artist instruction. This course/team will promote inclusion by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve, no matter the social category or demographic group they identify with.
