Catalog Description: This course is for first-year members of the women's intercollegiate softball team at Snow College. It is not repeatable for credit.

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled, preparing them for a lifetime of physical health. Students who take activity classes also have improved overall college success. Activity courses fulfill elective requirements for all majors as well as pre-requisite requirements for some teaching majors.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to demonstrate the skills, fundamentals and rules of softball. Students will be assessed through class attendance and participation, and teacher observation of skills, fundamentals and rules.

Students will be able to demonstrate the leadership qualities associated with playing as a team. Students will be assessed through teacher evaluation of interactions with team members.

Students will be able to demonstrate the use of physical conditioning techniques and training skills. Students will be assessed through teacher observation of on-field performance.


Content:
The Exercise Science Department and Snow College value the success of all students. This course will strive to help students succeed through covering multiple approaches to softball fundamentals including offense, defense, team play, conditioning, and special situations. This class will strive to help students succeed through class materials and course content including examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

Class Participation and Attendance 30 to 40%

Observations 25 to 40%

Instructor evaluation of teamwork 25 to 40%

Pedagogy Statement:
This class will be taught by lecture and lab which allows the students to learn about and practice participating on a sports team. Teaching methods will accommodate students of differing skill levels and abilities. This course will promote student success by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve one's self.
