Catalog Description: This course is for second year members of the women's intercollegiate softball team at Snow College. It is not repeatable for credit. Softball is a sport that requires a high fitness level, and good conditioning. High fitness levels and good conditioning have been shown to lead to fewer injuries. This class is intended to put student athletes into an optimal position so that they will be ready to play softball during an Intercollegiate season and improve their skills, leadership and rule based knowledge of the sport.

Prerequisites: Instructor's permission

Justification: Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled. Students who take activity classes also have improved overall college success. Activity courses fulfill elective requirements for all majors as well as pre-requisite requirements for some teaching majors.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Student athletes will be able to demonstrate the skills, fundamentals, and rules of softball. Student athletes will be assessed through participation and attendance as well as instructor observation of skills, fundamentals, and knowledge of rules.

Student athletes will be able to demonstrate the leadership qualities associated with playing as a team. Student athletes will be assessed through instructor observation and evaluation of demonstrated leadership and teamwork.

Student athletes will be able to explain, discuss, and demonstrate the use of physical conditioning techniques and training skills. Student athletes will be assessed through instructor in-practice oral assessments and observation of conditioning techniques and training skills.


Content:
This course will cover all the fundamentals of softball including: offense, defense, team play, special situations, conditioning. The Exercise Science Department and Snow College value the success of all students. This class will strive to help students succeed through class materials and course content including examples, assignments, discussions, etc.

Students will be evaluated on:

Attendance and Participation 30 to 40%

Instructor Evaluation/Observation of Leadership and Teamwork  20 to 40%

Instructor Assessment and Observation of skills, fundamentals, rules, and conditioning 30 to 40%

Pedagogy Statement:
It is anticipated that this course will have both lecture time as well as lab time for practicing skills, assessments, etc. Students from differing backgrounds will play and compete and build for the team. This course will promote student success by structuring assessment and teaching methods with the specific philosophy of valuing each participant's effort to improve one's self.
