Catalog Description: This course focuses on the application of basic nursing skills needed to prepare students for employment as a nursing assistant in a variety of healthcare settings. The course includes a combination of lecture, skill lab, and clinical experiences to provide students the knowledge and skills needed to pass the state certification test. This course is a prerequisite to the nursing program (LPN) at Snow College. Course fee required.

Prerequisites: Participants must be at least 16 years of age to enroll in the CNA class. Preference will be given to 17 years or older.

Justification: This course is recommended by the Allied Health advisory committee. State laws (OBRA) and regulations require that nursing assistants receive training in a state-approved program and show competence by successfully passing a theory and skills certification exam. The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course is a prerequisite for most University/College nursing programs including Snow College. Snow College's CNA program is approved and in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR).


Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate competency in basic nursing skills while providing patient care. Assessment of student learning outcomes will be measured by written quizzes and skills performance.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate competency in utilizing infection control techniques when providing patient care. Assessment of student learning outcomes will be measured by written quizzes and skills performance.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate behaviors consistent with the legal and ethical framework of nursing. Assessment of student learning outcomes will be measured by written quizzes and skills performance.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will create an environment promoting professional consideration for the patients social and cultural beliefs and practices. Assessment of student learning outcomes will be measured by written quizzes and group projects.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate effective communication skills with patient, family, and healthcare team members to maintain patient centered care. Assessment of student learning outcomes will be measured by written quizzes and skills performance during clinical setting.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate critical thinking skills in the delivery of patient centered care. Assessment of student learning outcomes will be measured by written quizzes, skills performance in lab and clinical setting.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will become certified in BLS (CPR). Assessment of student learning outcomes will be assessed through students ability to become certified through the American Heart Association (AHA).


Content:
Students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, competent, individualized, and holistic nursing care in the healthcare setting. Learning outcomes will be accomplished through lectures applying the theory component and hands-on skills taught utilizing the curriculum as mandated by the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR). Including:

Hygiene and Grooming
Nutrition
Body Systems
Mental Health
Cognitive Impairment and Dementia
Rehabilitation and Restorative Care
End of Life Care
CPR
Mother/Baby


Key Performance Indicators:
A student must earn a score of 80% or higher in their overall course grade as well as an 80% or higher on their final written exam to be eligible to test with the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR).
