Course Description

Students will demonstrate competency through written tests and skills pass-off sessions in the nursing laboratory. This course prepares students for client care and becoming part of the professional healthcare team. Students must be accepted into the Registered Nursing program to take this course. Students will schedule times for specific skill testing and open nursing lab time with the course instructor. This course is part of a required series to prepare students to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). (Additional fee required)

Justification

Mastering the fundamental skills of nursing at a registered nursing level is critical in performing competent, safe, and caring client care since ASN nurses spend the majority of their working time performing direct client care. Fundamentals of Nursing provides the basic knowledge and skills used in the clinical component, Medical-Surgical Nursing Across the Lifespan Lab/Clinical (NURS 1114).

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide evidence-based, safe, ethical, and legal patient care across the lifespan while following established procedures for selected psychomotor skills used as a registered nurse.
  2. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to verbalize and demonstrate how to chart professionally and ethically.
  3. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to identify current health care reform issues.

Course Content

Students will study the theory component of the objectives in NURS 1102 (Fundamentals of Nursing) and then have the opportunity to practice and master the related skills in Fundamentals of Nursing Lab, (NURS 1112). Students will then be required to perform the skills through a practical scenario as may be experienced in the health care setting. The skills and theory taught will be in the scope of practice as mandated by the State Board of Nursing. Content covered in this class will include current fundamental nursing skills.
