Course Description

This course is the lab component of NURS 1105 Adult Medical Surgical Nursing Care. Emphasis is on the application of the nursing process to enable health promotion and prevention in a laboratory setting. Students will apply the knowledge from the didactic course in a laboratory setting as they learn to work effectively as an important member of the healthcare team. The course is designed to apply and demonstrate mastery of the skills necessary in the healthcare setting of the registered nurse (RN). The student will gain an awareness of the roles of other healthcare team members and community resources. This course is part of a required series to prepare students to practice safe and competent care as mandated by the Utah State Board of Nursing. This course prepares students to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Justification

This course is required for the registered nurse (RN) to be successful in the field of nursing and to practice safe and competent care within the scope of practice of the RN as mandated by the Utah State Board of Nursing. Students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively as an important member in the health care team. This course prepares students to apply for and pass the national licensing exam.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will apply principles from the biological and behavioral sciences and nursing theory to determine medical and surgical nursing actions for adult patients while demonstrating a knowledge of basic laboratory values and how they relate to patient care in a laboratory setting.
  2. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to apply the knowledge of common primary and secondary care diseases/conditions including the impact of socio-cultural and spiritual values that will be used to develop a holistic plan of nursing care with emphasis on assessment, planning, interventions, and evaluation in a laboratory setting.
  3. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide evidence-based, safe, ethical, and legal patient care across the lifespan while following established procedures for selected psychomotor skills used in a laboratory setting.
  4. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate basic principles of communication, teaching, and learning skills needed when relating to patients, family members, healthcare team members, classmates, and/or faculty in a laboratory setting.

Course Content

Students will apply the knowledge and skills necessary to provide competent, safe, individualized, and holistic nursing care in a laboratory setting. Course objectives will be accomplished by providing learning experiences that emphasize nursing care of the adult medical surgical patient including basic concepts and challenges of patient management, perioperative care, and acute community-based challenges. Nursing care for the patient with impaired respiratory, cardiovascular, hematologic, immunologic, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, genitourinary, reproductive, integumentary, sensory, & neurologic function will also be reinforced.
