PE 1302 Advanced Swimming

Course Description

Advanced Swimming is a course that helps students improve their swimming skills with more advanced and competitive swimming strokes, including: freestyle, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly. The class will provide timed swims and a regular workout schedule. This class is repeatable up to 2 times for credit.

Justification

Physical activity is an important component of lifetime health and wellness. Physical activity can lead to positive physiological and psychological outcomes. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type-II diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer risk may be reduced with physical activity. Physical activity has been identified as an effective antidepressant and treatment for depression. This class will provide access to physical activity for students enrolled.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will learn about and be able to demonstrate improved skills in the four advanced and competitive swimming strokes (freestyle, backcrawl, breaststroke, and butterfly)
  2. Students will learn about and be able to demonstrate the skills necessary to perform competitive turns and starts
  3. Students will learn about and be able to demonstrate skills in strokes, turns and diving.
  4. Students will be able to explain and discuss the physical benefits that swimming provides our body for exercise and relaxation.
