Catalog Description: This course gives students the hands-on lab experience required for Auto 1201. It covers theory, operation, diagnosis, and overhaul procedures of automotive automatic transmissions and trans-axles, including planetary gearing, valve bodies, computerized transmission controls, torque converters, and torque converter lock-up.

Justification: This course is required for Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) certification and ASE Education Foundation accreditation. It is approved by the advisory committee. It is a core course for the Automotive Technology AAS degree and certificates.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to safely perform the tasks listed in the current edition of ASE Education Foundation Certification and Accreditation for Automobile Training Programs. Students will complete 95% of Priority 1, 80% of Priority 2, and 50% of Priority 3 tasks from ASE Education Foundation.

Students will understand the components of a planetary gear set, know the gear combinations that can be obtained and diagnose component failures.  Students will be assessed by completion of appropriate lab sheets, demonstration, and ASE task list.

Students will be able to use the appropriate specialized tools and equipment to diagnose and repair automatic transmissions and transaxles. Students will be assessed by completion of appropriate lab sheets, demonstration, and ASE task list.

Students will be able to diagnose, repair, and adjust transmission apply devices, clutches, bands, and mechanical holding devices.  Students will be assessed by completion of appropriate lab sheets, demonstration, and ASE task list.

Students will understand the power flow through automatic transmissions and use this to diagnose component failures. Students will be assessed by completion of appropriate lab sheets, demonstration, and ASE task list.

Students will maintain a reasonably clean work environment. Students will be assessed by their participation in regular shop clean-up and the maintenance of their workstation.

Key Performance Indicators:
Students will be graded on the completion of their ASE task list through, demonstration, the completion of lab sheets, and participation.

ASE task list, demonstration, and lab sheets 80 to 95%

Participation 0 to 20%

Shop clean-up 5 to 10%

Pedagogy Statement:
This is a lab class taught in conjunction with a lecture class, AUTO 1201. Students will be taught using demonstration, supervised lab assignments, and live work in the Automotive Repair Shop with guidance and assistance from the instructors.
