ASSESSING THE MATH GE OUTCOME

Mel reported that the Math Department is ready to commit to an
assessment of quantitative reasoning during the year 2011-2012.
After much discussion, a potential process for assessing math
performance at Snow College was agreed upon:
• Core skills at the Math 1010 level will be identified. A core
skill in this context is one that is essential to Math 1010
and reiterated in Math 1030, Math 1040, or Math 1050. (Either
of those three courses satisfy the MATH GE requirement.)
• Core skills for each of Math 1030, Math 1040, and Math 1050
will be identified.
• A pretest evaluating students' mastery of Math 1010 Core
Skills will be constructed and administered to all Math 1010
students at the beginning of the Spring 2012 semester.
• A pre-test evaluating students' mastery of Math 1030, Math
1040, or Math 1050 Core Skills will be constructed and
administered to all students in those courses at the beginning
of the Spring 2012 semester.
• A post-test evaluating students' mastery of Math 1010 Core
Skills and Math 1030, Math 1040, or Math 1050 Core Skills will
e constructed and administered to all students in Math 1030,
Math 1040, or Math 1050 at the end of the Spring 2012 semester.
• The data collected from these tests will be analyzed.
• Recommendations for future action will be made.
Mel moved, with Clinton seconding, that the Math GE Outcome be
assessed in Spring 2012. The motion carried unanimously.
Joseph moved, with Patty seconding, that the committee recommend
that the Math Department strongly consider using the asessment
process outlined above. The motion carried unanimously.
