Catalog Description: The primary focus of this course is to educate students on the attributes of an effective professional teacher and also introduces the field of Education. Opportunities for assessment of personal qualifications are provided through self-analysis, discussion and experience as an observer/aide for a minimum of 24 hours in public school classrooms. This course also includes discussions of the history of American education, and the roles of various professionals engaged in education.

Justification: This course is a required course for all education majors. It serves as an introduction to the career as a professional educator and is offered at each of the USHE sister institutions. It is a perquisite to most university teacher-education programs and recommended in others. It has a common course number with most colleges and universities in the State of Utah system. (Southern Utah University - EDUC 1010; University of Utah - TL 1010; Utah State University - TEAL 1010; Utah Valley State College - EDEL 1010; Dixie State College - EDUC 1010; Weber State University - EDUC 1010).
Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to recognize and discuss the importance of the Utah Effective Teaching Standards in helping teachers be more effective in the classroom. The outcome will be assessed through class discussion and lab observation.
Students will be able to discuss the importance of problem solving and reflection for the professional teacher. This will be assessed through lab observation, group work, and written assignment.
Students will be able to describe three strategies from classroom observation. The strategies will be assessed through written assignment.
Students will gain the knowledge to begin to create a professional portfolio that will be used throughout their educational experience. Students will be assessed through written assignment and research.
Students will evaluate their knowledge on the opportunities available for teachers to increase their effectiveness and continue their professional growth. This outcome will be assessed through written assignment and group discussion.

The lab portion of this class will include students having the opportunity to observe teachers in a real classroom dealing with real classroom situations and formulate ideas about classroom management, content delivery and the real world of teaching. They will also evaluate what they learn from the course and the text in terms of real world application.

Pedagogy Statement:
This course is taught by class lecture, class discussion, written assignment, exam, and lab observations. This class provides students with a realistic, engaging, hands-on experiences, and academically informative introduction to the discipline of education.
