Catalog Description: This course addresses basic principles of business law, including the legal environment of business, forms of business organization, ethics, torts, contracts, agency, and the purchase and sale of goods under the Uniform Commercial Code. This class will provide a basic framework of business law which will help students who either start their own business, work for someone else, or pursue a legal degree.

Justification: This is a required course for the Associate Science Business (ASB) degree and is accepted as a course equivalent at most colleges and universities in Utah. The course is also a requirement in the Commercial Music degree.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will develop an understanding of the legal and business environment.  Students will review and simulate legal processes using cases that relate to business. The instructor will provide feedback.

Students will develop a vocabulary of legal terminology.  Students will be expected to use correct terminology in quizzes exams, assignments, and class discussions. The instructor will provide feedback.

Students will evaluate and think critically about business and legal relationships.
 Students will have regular assignments and discussions where they will evaluate legal cases using critical thinking and class content. The instructor will provide feedback.

Students will identify the personal and social implications of knowing about the law.  Students will reflect on how the concepts in class relate to past experiences and future aspirations. Students will be assessed through assignments, exams, and projects. The instructor will provide feedback.


Content:
BUS 2050 gives students a broad overview of legal issues in the business environment. Specifically, the course will cover, among other things:
- Constitutional Foundations and Sources of Law
- Litigation Process and Alternatives
- Laws regarding the organization and operation of a business
- Intellectual Property
- Financial Transaction Law
- Contracts
- Sales Transaction Law
- Liability
- Property and Environmental Law
