Catalog Description: In this course, students learn highly marketable skills in preparing strategic professional business documents and presentations. Students explore a variety of problem-solving approaches typical in a professional environment. This course includes employment document preparation, as well as job interview strategies and techniques. BUS 2200 is required for the Associate of Science Business degree. Skills learned in this course are valuable to students in any major.

Justification: Business Communication is a core course for the ASB (Associate Science of Business) and for other certificates in the Business Department. This course also fulfills the writing requirement for select CTE AAS programs.

BUS 2200 is a prerequisite for business majors at the universities in Utah and has been articulated as a direct transfer with the state schools.


Student Learning Outcomes:
The student will be able to produce professional messages and reports using proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, word usage, etc. Students will be assessed by the instructor through individual written assignments, team projects, and exams.

The student will be able to give professional oral presentations to peers based on industry best practices and criteria established in class discussions. Students will be assessed in class by the instructor and peers using pre-established rubrics.

The student will be able to produce a professional cover letter, resume, and reference sheet. Students will be assessed by the instructor through written assignments and exams.

The student will be able to positively contribute to team projects. Students will be assessed by both the instructor and peers using pre-established rubrics.

The student will demonstrate his or her understanding of the process of communication from the positions of “receiver” and “sender” in a variety of business and professional contexts. Students will be assessed through assignments, exams, and projects.
