Catalog Description: This course provides an introduction to the fundamental skills and knowledge of rock climbing. The course will cover proper use and care of equipment, basic knots, movement on rock, belaying, rappelling, climbing classifications, and climbing related Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics and techniques. (Additional fee required).

Justification: This course provides students an introduction into rock climbing. It combines some of the basic elements of fitness, and lends itself to socialization and trust of others as it requires a partner that can be trusted and who can trust you in demanding situations. Similar courses are taught at other USHE institutions.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate an understanding of rock climbing.  Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Utilize and tie proper knots used in rock climbing applications. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Exhibit proper belay techniques. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Display various climbing techniques and movements while on top rope. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Demonstrate proper usage and care of equipment. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Apply proper communication signals associated with rock climbing. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Identify classifications of rock climbs. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.

Apply appropriate Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics and techniques as they apply to rock climbing. Students will be able to demonstrate this SLO as evaluated through discussion, written assessment, practical assessment.
