Catalog Description: This course builds on the foundation skills learned in the previous course and provides additional instruction in nail services and art techniques. In addition, you will study work ethics, time management and essential business skills, licensing, and laws.

Prerequisites: TENT 1100

Justification: A student taking this course along with TENT 1100, TENT 1600, and TENT 1610 will have the knowledge and skills needed to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology Licensure Examination (NIC test). This is a requirement for licensure through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing of Utah. The Nail Technology program can be taken alone or as part of the Cosmetology/Barbering program.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Communicate effectively with your salon guests and coworkers. This outcome will be assessed through assignments, discussions, and/or quizzes.

Demonstrate proper sanitation procedures. This outcome will be assessed through assignments, discussions, and/or quizzes.

Demonstrate the proper natural nail care techniques, including state board-required skills. This outcome will be assessed through hands-on application. An instructor will observe and feedback will be given.

Demonstrate the use and safety of industry equipment. This outcome will be assessed through hands-on application. An instructor will observe and feedback will be given.

Demonstrate proper techniques and application of nail enhancements.
 This outcome will be assessed through discussions, assignments, and/or presentations.


Content:
This course builds on the foundation skills learned in the previous course and provides additional instruction in nail services and art techniques. In addition, you will study work ethics, time management and essential business skills, licensing, and laws.

Objectives:
- Communicate effectively with your salon guests and coworkers.
- Demonstrate sanitation procedures.
- Demonstrate the proper natural nail care techniques, including state board-required skills.
- Demonstrate the use and safety of industry equipment.
- Demonstrate proper techniques and application of nail enhancements.

We strive to introduce all students to the procedures performed in the beauty industry and all them to express their differences and culture through creative projects and group activities. The course is designed to empower and foster talent in all students, including groups traditionally underrepresented in this career, and to move beyond stereotypes.

Student Learning Outcomes will be assessed by the following:

Assignments 5 to 20%

Hands-on application/participation/presentations 25 to 50%

Representative Text and/or Supplies:
8th edition Milady Standard Nail Technology textbook and CIMA 1-year access card. (Both are required)

Supplemental materials may be required


Pedagogy Statement:
Teaching methods may include lecture, class discussion, group work, hands-on activities, and the incorporation of low-stakes assignments.

In this course, instructors will strive to connect with students on a personal level by spending multiple hours daily with this group of students. Students will also be encouraged to make connections in order to foster an inclusive classroom atmosphere. This may be accomplished through group assignments. Students will rotate until everyone has had the opportunity to work together.
